There’s nothing more frustrating than spending hours perfecting your gorgeous real Christmas tree than to find it brown and dead before the big day. We’ve seen lots of social media posts recently with people worrying about trees shedding their needles at an alarming rate. As tree care specialists we thought we would offer you some tips on how to keep your real Christmas Tree green and full until December 25th arrives.
- Put your Christmas tree in water as soon as you get it home. Remember the tree still thinks it is planted in the woods, don’t let it find out otherwise or you will cause it stress which means shedding needles.
- Trim the trunk to boost the amount of water your tree can absorb. When the tree is cut sap rushes to the wound and this can cause a barrier obstructing the tree’s ability to absorb water. Trim off a small amount with a handsaw to avoid this scenario.
- Keep your tree away from red hot radiators and open fires. Heat sources cause pine needles and branches to dry out very quickly and even though it can be difficult in the depths of winter….try to avoid over heating the room housing your tree.
- One more word of advice….if your tree does dry out be very careful about leaving the lights on unsupervised. You would be surprised how quickly the whole thing can go up in flames and nobody wants that!
We hope you find these tips useful. Merry Christmas from your local tree surgeon; Poplar Tree Solutions!!
